Oyster Heaven is pleased to announce the approval of the licence for Project Asta, its first oyster restoration site in the Veerse Meer, a location where the company will be deploying a large-scale oyster reef to restore 4 million oysters.
The company has been working closely with local authorities and organisations for months to secure the necessary permits and logistics, and the successful receipt of the licence marks an exciting milestone in Oyster Heaven’s mission.
With the licence now in hand, the company has launched phase 0 of its restoration project. This phase focuses on testing logistics, processes, and the deployment kit used to place Mother Reefs – specially designed clay bricks that serve as the new homes for baby oysters. The first batch of Mother Reefs has been deployed in collaboration with a local fisher in the waters of the Veerse Meer, marking the beginning of Oyster Heaven’s first restoration project.
“We are excited to take this important first step in the Veerse Meer,” said George, Oyster Heaven’s Founder and Business Lead. “This test phase helps us refine our systems and ensure everything is in place for the large-scale deployment planned for next spring.”
The successful placement of these initial Mother Reefs paves the way for the next phase: large-scale deployment, which is scheduled for spring 2025. Project Asta is set to become the largest oyster restoration project in Europe with 4 million native oysters (Ostrea edulis).
Project Asta is co-financed as part of Purina Europe’s Ocean Regeneration Programme which aims to restore vital marine habitats, and is supported by Province Zeeland and Rewilding Europe Capital.
Oyster Heaven’s commitment to restoring oysters is grounded in research and science. The company’s approach includes collaboration with local communities and a focus on sustainable and scalable practices that maximise the benefits for the environment.
Oyster Heaven has also started pilots at several sites in the UK with promising results so far. Stay tuned for updates as the restoration efforts grow and expand to new sites.
