Oyster Heaven is excited to announce the launch of “Adopt a Mother Reef”, a new initiative developed in response to public interest in supporting their oyster restoration efforts.
Through this campaign, people can adopt one of Oyster Heaven’s Mother Reefs, the specially designed clay bricks that help baby oysters settle and thrive. These reefs help regenerate barren sea floors, creating vital ecosystems that enhance marine biodiversity and improve water quality.
Starting December 12th, the Mother Reef will be featured at the Nieuwe Instituut museum in Rotterdam as part of its New Store Pop-up 3.0. Visitors can see this innovative reef structure firsthand, explore other regenerative products, and adopt a Mother Reef on-site to become part of Oyster Heaven’s mission.

“Through the ‘Adopt a Mother Reef’ campaign, we’re inviting people to actively participate in ocean conservation,” said George Birch, Founder and Business Lead at Oyster Heaven. “The Het Nieuwe Instituut exhibit offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase our work and raise awareness of our mission and the importance of oyster restoration for the health of our oceans, while the campaign provides a unique opportunity for individuals to participate in a meaningful way”
The “Adopt a Mother Reef” campaign offers multiple levels of involvement, allowing participants to choose their contribution:
Each adopted Mother Reef will be deployed in the surrounding areas of Oyster Heaven’s ongoing projects – currently in the Veerse Meer, and soon in more locations -, supporting the expansion and resilience of the restored reefs.
This initiative aims not only to restore this important habitat but also to raise awareness about the critical role oyster reefs play in ocean health. As keystone species, oysters create reef ecosystems that host hundreds of other species and naturally clean seawater, with a single adult oyster filtering up to 200 litres per day.
With only 15% of the world’s oyster reefs remaining—and functionally extinct in the North Sea—this campaign empowers participants to take an active role in ocean conservation. Adopters will receive regular updates on the reef’s progress and the tangible impact of their support, fostering a meaningful connection to this vital restoration effort.
The campaign launches on December 12th, with adoption options available through the Oyster Heaven website. People interested in supporting Oyster Heaven’s mission or seeing the Mother Reef firsthand can visit the Het Nieuwe Instituut’s pop-up regenerative store.
This Christmas, give a gift that gives back to nature.
You can now adopt a Mother Reef for your loved ones and help restore 100 oysters!
