It’s evident from our name, Oyster Heaven, that oysters are our primary focus. But why? Why do we emphasize oysters over other marine creatures when it comes to restoring the balance in our oceans and cooling down the planet? Of all the endangered species in the world, why is it our mission to bring oysters back to where they used to be?

Our model allows us to do this independently and at scale because oyster reefs do really valuable jobs such as filtering water, managing nitrogen and improving biodiversity. We carefully monitor and measure these jobs and sell them as “credits” using the profits to further regenerate oyster reefs. But what organisations should we work with?

Oysters are not the most beautiful species out there, but they have fascinating qualities. We might be a bit biased, but we are sure that these incredible features will surprise you too.

Oyster restoration is not new. The scientific community has been working hard on restoring these keystone species for the last decades with lots of learnings that got us to where we are today. However, oyster restoration still faces some challenges that had not been overcome, until now.

Rewilding is a progressive approach to conservation. It’s about giving nature a helping hand allowing it to thrive independently and bringing it back to its natural state, creating wilder and more biodiverse habitats. This approach, however, is not exclusive to terrestrial habitats. In fact, rewilding the ocean is a key factor not only to restore marine ecosystems but also to fight climate change.

Extremes of drought and flooding, no snow in winter, heat waves in the Northern Hemisphere and still wearing a winter coat at the beginning of May are just few of the many signs of climate change.

What few might realise is that when we impact the environment of one corner of the earth, the effect ripples in the remaining three.

Oysters are keystone species to generate biodiversity and bring our oceans to balance again. Their impact on the marine habitat is incredibly positive, but they also offer many benefits beyond the water. 

It is also important to acknowledge the broader scope of coastal restoration efforts, such as kelp, seagrass or mangrove restoration projects.

These are the benefits of nature restoration projects for coastal communities.

Wading or water birds are either native or passing migrating birds common to shorelines, river mouths and estuaries. A decline in the population of some wader species has been linked to a decrease in the availability of food and settlement surfaces. The restoration of oyster beds is the solution to help wading birds.
